Walking the Art: A Final HueMan:Shelter Community Experience

Join Midtown Houston, Urban Paths, and HueMan:Shelter for a guided community walk through the heart of Midtown.

As HueMan:Shelter enters its final stretch, this public walk invites Houstonians to experience the installations together through movement, storytelling, and shared reflection.

One of the most meaningful ways to encounter this project is in community. Standing inside the artwork, hearing the stories behind each piece, and witnessing how others respond creates space for conversation, connection, and deeper understanding.

About the Experience

During this guided walk, participants will move along the Milam corridor to experience the full HueMan:Shelter public art route, including:

• 3 METRO bus shelter installations along Route 82
• 2 underpass artworks beneath I-45 and Spur 527
• The large-scale mural at 2525 San Jacinto

Along the way, participants will learn more about the artists, the CRR UpRise cohort members, and the partnerships that brought the project to life.

HueMan:Shelter was created to invite reflection, but that reflection deepens when people experience the work together.

A guided walk offers the chance to slow down, ask questions, hear context, and move through Midtown with fresh attention to the spaces we often pass by.

This final community walk is an opportunity to experience the project as a shared civic conversation before the campaign concludes.

About HueMan:Shelter

HueMan:Shelter is a temporary public art initiative sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies through the Public Art Challenge, in collaboration with Midtown Houston and the City of Houston.

The project uses visual storytelling in public space to shift perceptions of homelessness while creating paid opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness through an Employment-First model.

Through collaboration between Houston artists and CRR UpRise cohort members, HueMan:Shelter brings stories of home, dignity, resilience, and belonging into everyday public spaces.
