HueMan:Shelter is a public art project designed to change perceptions of homelessness by bringing together artists and unhoused individuals in a creative, collaborative experience. Several unique public art installations will beautifully illustrate the lived experiences of our neighbors. This project will feature art at METRO Bus Shelters, two stunning large-scale murals, and two multi-media sculptural projects at underpasses.
Throughout the project, a series of engaging events will unite artists, unsheltered individuals, and the broader community. An interactive, mobile-friendly map will guide community members and visitors to each installation, encouraging everyone to explore and connect. Art walks featuring the artists and project partners will also be planned.
HueMan:Shelter, awarded a $1 million grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, is an innovative part of Houston’s comprehensive approach to addressing homelessness. Local artists will be chosen through an open RFP process, making this a true community effort.
Houston is using public art as a powerful tool to challenge perceptions of homelessness, create jobs, and foster meaningful conversations. The HueMan:Shelter project partners local artists with unhoused individuals, providing employment, skills training, and connections to essential support services through Career and Recovery Resources’ UpRise Enterprise program. By combining art with economic opportunity, Houston continues to invest in innovative and compassionate solutions that strengthen the community and promote long-term stability.
Houston’s approach to addressing homelessness is proving to be a national model for success. Since adopting the Housing First strategy in 2012—prioritizing permanent housing with supportive services—homelessness has decreased by 63%, and over 30,000 people have been housed. Once one of the worst cities for homelessness, Houston is now recognized as a leader in compassionate, results-driven solutions.
